In what was the largest recruiting class in the Western Athletic Conference, Nevada added seven new prospects to their program in 2010, including five prep prospects and two junior college transfers. It is a class that features athletic wings, talented backcourt standouts and a pair of much needed big men. While it is the middle of summer and plenty of new faces are just getting settled in at the University of Nevada, there is also plenty to talk about Wolf Pack hoops, including one players who is trying to get his career started and another who just landed his first offer.
As most Nevada fans already know, the Wolf Pack hoops roster appears pretty set for the next two years. It is a roster filled with excellent young talent, so much so that the Class of 2011 is somewhat irrelevant for recruiting. But that doesn’t mean that 2012 won’t be busy. One player Nevada continues to keep an eye on is Sacramento (Calif.) Jesuit high school point guard Akachi Okugo, an athletic 6-foot-1 point guard who continues to ride under the radar.
Expected to be one of the top junior college prospects in the 2011 class to watch, Kolby Arendse instead will be taking his game to Nevada immediately. SilverandBlueSports spoke with the Burlington (Wash.) native to find out why he chose to play for the Pack now.
As all college sports fans know by now, conference realignment has been a major story across the campuses of various schools around the country. As teams head into the summer prior to the 2010-11 academic and athletic seasons, plenty of transitions have been made. But what about the University of Nevada?
As expected, the 2010 NBA Draft was full of intrigue, surprises and trades, with even former Nevada star Luke Babbitt, the 2009-10 WAC Player of the Year, being dealt from Minnesota to Portland. SilverandBlueSports spoke with Babbitt to get his draft night reaction.
Arguably the two best hoops prospects to ever emerge from Northern Nevada, Armon Johnson and Luke Babbitt, who both played for the hometown Wolf Pack, were selected in the 2010 NBA Draft last night. Coincidentally enough, after a trade involving Babbitt, the two lefties are potential teammates once again, landing spots with Portland Trailblazers.
Armon Johnson was the 35th overall pick (second round) to the Portland Trailblazers just moments ago, and will likely now join Reno native and Wolf Pack teammate Luke Babbitt on the same team in the NBA.
The 2009-10 Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year, Luke Babbitt, who left after his sophomore year at Nevada, was just selected as the No. 16 overall pick by the Minnesota Timberwolves. The T-Wolves already selected Syracuse standout guard Wesley Johnson with the No. 4 overall pick in the 2010 NBA Draft.
