Mock Draft 150-1For the past two years, Silver and Blue Sports has put together a mock draft for both the NBA and the NFL and had some surprising results.  We’ve picked close to 80 percent of the first-rounds correctly.  Of course, no draft has been more anticipated than the 2011 NFL Draft, with four former Wolf Pack players, including the greatest college rushing duo ever in quarterback Colin Kaepernick and running back Vai Taua, all strong candidates to be selected this upcoming weekend.

‘Round the Rim – Rising to the top

David Carter 150-16Nevada head coach David Carter and his staff have been connected with a number of late-rising 2011 prospects since the season ended.  Some of those players include TCU signee Adrick McKinney, a 6-foot-8 JUCO big man from the Lone Star state, and Hawaii signee Dillon Biggs, a lengthy 6-foot-6 prep forward from Los Angeles.  But after watching that duo sign elsewhere, Nevada has set their eyes on a new ‘11 duo, including super athletic combo guard Darnell Taylor.

Nick Hale 150-2Silver and Blue Sports briefly caught up with Nevada junior rusher Nick Hale and senior linebacker Brandon Marshall following this year’s annual Silver and Blue spring game.  The running backs and linebackers went up against each other for much of Nevada’s spring session, with both units performing well during a trio of scrimmages.  We spoke with Hale and Marshall about how they felt about their units, plus how they feel going into the summer and fall.

The Howl 150-9The last time there was Division I football at Mackay Stadium, any ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat) doctors in attendance had to be kicking themselves for not bringing cards.  Between the Fortress of Solitude-like temperatures and the collective overuse of the superior laryngeal nerve of 30,000 live humans, the mass patient intake opportunity was huge.  There was also a decent football game that night, and even if sound does travel faster in warm air than cold, the echoes of the Mackay Miracle still lingered, though inaudibly, 141 days later, like the smoke rings of a cannon long since fired.

Rishard Matthews 150-10Silver and Blue Sports briefly caught up with Nevada senior wideouts Rishard Matthews and Shane Anderson following this year’s annual Silver and Blue spring game.  Matthews is coming an incredible first season in the WAC, earning accolades such as National Player of the Week and Kraft Bowl Offensive MVP after arriving in Reno following a stint at Bakersfield College.  Anderson, who looked terrific this spring, is hoping to breakout during his senior season.

Gates departs for FSU; Claus promoted

Zac Claus 150-1While the late signing period is the major story at most college basketball programs right now, it is also the time where coaches typically switch jobs.  As Nevada is still mining out a handful of 2011 and 2012 prospects to recruit, one of their own is on the move.  Dennis Gates, a long-time assistant in the Pac-10, MAC and WAC, plus an NBA assistant, has taken a position at rising ACC program Florida State.  With that news Nevada is expected to promote current Nevada Director of Basketball Operations Zac Claus to assistant coach.

Cortez Woods 150-1Every fanbase around college football typically remembers the first recruit in every class. That first commitment is truly the beginning of the future. For the University of Nevada, the 2012 recruiting class got started with a bang thanks to the verbal of JC-All American Cortez Woods.  A 6-foot-3, 270-pound defensive tackle from American River College (ARC) in the Sacramento area, Woods should make quite an impact on the Wolf Pack next season.
