Checking in on Pennix

Featured, Football Recruiting on June 6th, 2011 9 Comments

Shane Pennix 150-1One of San Diego’s top prep players two summers ago at Valhalla high school was Shane Pennix, a rugged, 6-foot-3, 235-pound defensive playmaker with plenty of size and speed.  A two-time all-area selection and a young man that had a host of offers, including a pair from the Pac-10, there was little doubt that Pennix was going to play big-time college football. Fast forward to the present with Pennix now at Grossmont College near his hometown and you’ll see a standout JUCO defensive end prospect who is eyeballing a massive sophomore year.

Nevada scores first Texan in Gipson

Featured, Football Recruiting on June 4th, 2011 23 Comments

Jarred Gipson 150-2Wolf Pack fans will remember the name Jarred Gipson, a 6-foot-2, 220-pound prospect for a long time. Less than 24 hours after Silver and Blue Sports featured the talented Texan tight end in a front page story, Gipson made the call to Hall of Fame head coach Chris Ault.  His verbal commitment means Nevada, which made the decision a year ago to recruit the Lone Star state, has landed their first Texas prep prospect. Silver and Blue Sports followed up with Gipson to get the final word.

Lone Star Gem

Featured, Football Recruiting on June 3rd, 2011 33 Comments

Jarred Gipson 150-1If there is one player in Texas that Nevada would love to become their first ever Lone Star state commitment it would be Cypress Creek tight end Jarred Gipson.  A rising 6-foot-2, 220-pound prospect, Gipson could very well be the ideal fit for the Wolf Pack’s high-octane Pistol offense.  He’s athletic, explosive and a devastating blocker. Once you watch a touch of his film, fans of the Silver and Blue will instantly be reminded of departing senior Virgil Green, one of college football’s best TE prospects who will suit up on Sunday’s for the Denver Broncos in the near future.

Catching up with Williams

jonavaughn williams 150-1In Rishard Matthews and Brandon Wimberly, Nevada currently has a pair of all-WAC wide receivers from Southern California. They also have a number of talented defensive backs, like Thad Brown and Khalid Wooten, who hail from the Los Angeles area.  One 2012 prospect who could continue either tradition is Junipero Serra athlete Jonavaughn Williams, an All-Trinity League playmaker and one of Orange County’s top prospects.

Beast in the Empire

Featured, Football Recruiting on June 1st, 2011 17 Comments

Nevada always recruits Southern California’s Inland Empire really hard, bringing in standout offense and defensive linemen almost every year.  Current Wolf Pack starters like Chris Barker and Brett Roy were recently named preseason All-WAC selections by one publication.  Fans of the Silver and Blue can expect the same in the Class of 2012, with Temecula (Calif.) defensive end Teddy Queen surfacing as one of the top potential recruits in the region.  With attention from throughout the Pac-12 and the Mountain West Conferences, Queen is certainly deserving.

Cannon Fodder: The Imaginary Mailbag

Basketball, Featured, Football on May 31st, 2011 2 Comments

John Bender 150-1This edition of Cannon Fodder is the result of two unfortunate things. The first is that I have a lot of divergent thoughts rolling around in my head, but not enough on any one topic to justify a full-length treatment. So I’ve decided to scrap together these leftovers to make a sort of “Fremont Casserole.”.  The second is my dearth (”lack”, for Sparks High graduates) of fan mail. So I’ve decided to create my own and respond to it. So, technically what follows is a meandering conversation with myself. Fodder Fans, I give you the first edition of The Imaginary Mailbag.

‘Round the Rim – The Final Pair?

David Carter 150-7As we’ve chronicled since the end of the most recent hoops season, Nevada, which has yet to add a player to the roster while seeing three players depart, will be adding some talent this summer.  Even though the late signing period has come and gone, a handful of prospects the Wolf Pack staff have been scouting are still on the board.  Who is Nevada likely to add?

Listen to The Howl: Casey Moore

Basketball Recruiting, Featured, Football, Football Recruiting on May 28th, 2011 2 Comments

Casey Moore 150-1For the 2nd time in 4 years, Nevada football lost one of it’s top offensive coordinators to a BCS program when Jim Mastro, the Wolf Pack running backs coach, departed for UCLA. Prior to that, O-Line assistant coach Chris Klenakis took the same position at Arkansas.  It really isn’t that surprising to those around the coaching profession.  With the production of Nevada’s Pistol offense, the statistics have been noticed by every program in the country.

Difference maker in Dunn

Featured, Football Recruiting on May 27th, 2011 12 Comments

Haji Dunn 150-1There’s always a ton of prep talent in Northern California that gets little to no national recruiting attention. That’s been proven over the years.  Perhaps some of that is changing with the status of Arik Armstead, the No. 1 prospect in the country according to a pair of national recruiting sites, including Scout.com.  One of Armstead’s prep teammates at Pleasant Grove high school, Haji “D.J.” Dunn, is starting to turn heads as well, and the release of his highlight video, produced by Silver and Blue Sports, should make him a favorite no matter where he plays college ball.

Nevada bounces back in WAC Tournament

Baseball, Featured on May 26th, 2011 No Comments

CA-Nevada 150-3After being no-hit for a half-dozen innings in their WAC Tournament opener, No. 4 seed Nevada bounced back in a big way in the elimination bracket against No. 3 seed New Mexico State.  Nevada pounded Aggie starter Tyler Mack, plus his replacement Randy Montoya, out of the game in a 6-run first inning that saw the Pack bat around.  Freshman shortstop Braden Shipley had two RBI, and junior outfielder Nick Melino added another two in the first-inning barrage. The Aggie pitching duo combined to give up 5 walks, 3 hits and 6 earned runs as Nevada stays alive for another game on Friday.
