Defense Dominates Scrimmage
The Nevada Wolf Pack’s defense made its presence known Saturday afternoon at Mackay Stadium.
“Yeah, it’s about time,” smiled defensive tackle Willie Faataualofa.

Some players simply live up to the billing. Deontè Burton, coming off a sensational prep career in Los Angeles which saw him earn numerous accolades, arrived in Reno with the impact expectations as a freshman. After averaging 13.7 points and a team high 3.5 assists and 1.3 steals per game, the high-rising 6-foot-1 point man garnered the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Freshman of the Year honor. It was the fourth such time a Nevada freshman won the award. Burton was also named to the all-WAC Newcomer team and earned an all-WAC Honorable Mention.

One of the more popular statements in Wolf Pack football over the past several years came from former Nevada assistant coach Jim Mastro, the 2010 Running Backs Coach of the Year, when he talked about the definition of a “Nevada Back”. There have been a handful over the years to earn that title, including recently departed senior Vai Taua, who rushed for 4,588 yards and 45 touchdowns in 45 career games. Silver and Blue Sports briefly caught up with No. 34 in Los Angeles this past week.
