Default Vikings come up short against Valley

Cheikh Fall picked up a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds...

We're really going to need Fall to step up right away next year.

Here's some video of his team, he's number 21. Just watching the video's he appears to be pretty athletic and have some good range. He hits a fadeaway jumper and a 3. Hopefully he can develop some post moves while he's here, but few Nevada players ever seem to.

Right you are. Olek never got better in the post; neither did Dario and I've seen zero improvement in the post from both Kevin and Devonte since they arrived last year. Sigh.

(Pet peeve time). Yours is one of the most oft repeated erroneous statements I see on SBS, 'rocker. Nevada hasn't had a truly dominant offensive post since Faz, though his game was built more on finesse than power, which seems to be what most hereabouts credit as post dominance. JaVale wasn't here long enough to blossom, but had he stayed just one more season we would have seen a real jump in his post play. Olek, as this season progressed, became as close to a dominant offensive post presence as Nevada has had since Faz, and that after a season mostly spent on the perimeter shooting 3s last year. The improvement is there, but you and a few others apparently can't see it.

Next year I expect to see the same progression in post development with Panzer and Elliott that we watched with Olek and Dario. Will you be able to recognize it?

I don't completely agree. Much of Fazekas' dominance came from his play in the paint and ability to catch the ball down low and create a shot or to get great positioning on Drebs and get putbacks. Babbitt was also able to do that but he had that skill from day one. Czyz became that player for the second half of the season. But I didn't see a lot of skill development in any of those 3 but Czyz. They got bigger and smarter. They didn't develop traditional low post moves that they lacked coming in.

All players will get better as they mature, but I don't believe Nevada has been good at developing low post offensive skills as a general rule. They don't learn jump hooks. They don't learn up and unders or drop steps. Dario dunks...and does tip ins. That's about it. McGee scored on freak athleticism and size. Ikovlev shot 3s.

For years I've simply suggested we watch players like Tai Wesley, Nate Harris, Wilkerson (pretty much any USU post player), that slug from Montana that destroyed us in the tournament or many other players that use footwork, positioning, little jump hooks in the lane, and other moves to score efficiently versus bigger or more athletic opponents. Until the recent Czyz dominance I despaired of seeing a player develop along that path here at Nevada.

I hope that signals that we'll see such improvement from Elliott and Panzer. But right now they play small on offense. They need to do a lot of work in the off season.

Perhaps some of this is due to the type of player Nevada recruits. We go after length and athleticism. USU goes after a skill set. Maybe we get second tier players that have the length but lack some other factors. Dario has notoriously bad hands. McGee seemed (seems?) uninterested in developing a low post offense that doesn't revolve around spectacular dunks. Richie Phillips was always injured. Matt LaGrone was slow and didn't have great hands or moves. DeMarshay was always Demarshay. David Ellis was always David Ellis (we could have used him or a DeMarshay this year by the way). Chad was always Chad.

I don't see a lot of development in low post skills there. No matter how long they stayed at Nevada. Is it physical? Are these skills something that manifest themselves through hundreds or thousands of hours of practice in back yards and HS gyms, not college programs? I don't know. But I'm still waiting to see that kind of game development by someone not named Czyz. His left hand became lethal.

We haven't had a good back to the basket player since Faron Hand...

Last I heard of him is here: http://www.basketball.org.nz/news/hand-picked/
