View Full Version : Even I have to wonder why the BCS

Wouldn't make it so simple by going:
10 vs 9: Iowa vs Georgia Tech (they did this)
8 vs 7: Oregon vs Ohio State (they did this)
6 vs 5: BSU vs Florida
4 vs 3: TCU vs Cincinnati
2 vs 1: Texas vs Alabama (they did this)
It's absolutely illogical to just swap them around and make it 10 vs 9, 8 vs 7, 6 vs 4, 5 vs 3, and 2 vs 1. Makes zero sense other than all the "cartel" theory. It probably really is a case of oligopoly if not monopoly.
Oligopoly: "a condition in which a few sellers dominate a particular market to the detriment of competition by others "
Monopoly: "exclusive control of a particular market that is marked by the power to control prices and exclude competition and that esp. is developed willfully rather than as the result of superior products or skill"

It makes 0 sense, I agree. They had to put Boise(the worst non-BCS qualifier) vs Florida, and TCU vs GT IMO. Had to. That way you brush off TCU as only beating the worst automatic qualifier and Boise gets a mudhole stomped. I think that's what they should have done.

I agree that this is completely set up. The Fiesta Bowl took one for the team. That being said the legality of things is on the side of the BCS. Hell, if you want to look at it purely from a market perspective, neither TCU or Boise should be in. Second and third place teams from the Big 12, SEC or Big Ten would have brought far more money into Phoenix than the teams invited.

I wouldn't say zero sense. They're the two closest to AZ geographically. I think it's BS, but I can see how it could have happened on the square. But I'm a believer that Cincinnati and the Big East are breathing a sigh of relief.

I don't think its BS. If yr the Fiesta and you know Boise is going to put more butts in seats than Cincy (and nobody could dispute that) why on earth wouldn't you pick Boise? I think TCU / Boise is a great match-up, and 2 non-AQ teams make the BCS. People will complain about anything, unbelievable...

Where the set up comes into play, I believe is that the Fiesta could have picked Iowa, who probably would have put as many butts in the seat as Boise and TCU combined and had a much bigger television impact. Boise-Iowa would have been a great game, and I believe held a lot of national appeal.
You're right about Cincy. Cincy's a joke, and wouldn't have brought 10K to Phoenix.

I don't find it strange. Going back to last year's game between TCU and BSU... I am sure the voters for the Fiesta bowl knows it'll be a close game. It was a 1 point game last year. A close game usually means more people viewing the whole game.

Everything I read about the selection process talked about bowl committees more concerned with how fans traveled and impacted the local economy than TV ratings...

No there was no set up. The Orange got first pick after the NCG replacements were chosen (Florida to Sugar and TCU to Fiesta) and they took Iowa - so Iowa was not there for the Fiesta to choose... The Fiesta is a friend of the non-AQ taking Boise, I support their decision and look forward to the game!

How so? That is pretty speculative on your part. Boise brought more than 25k to Phoenix against Oklahoma. Do you really think Iowa would have brought 30K +? Penn State would have brought 40K but Iowa? I doubt it.

According to what I read yesterday, each team is only getting 17.5k tickets and the rest were already sold out so it doesn't matter if Iowa could bring 35k, the game was going to be sold out whether they had Iowa or TCU. I think this was done because they liked the matchup and it wasn't done to protect the BCS schools, like Cincy, from getting embarrassed by a non AQ team.

Iowa would have EASILY brought more than 30k. The school sold out of their 17k allotment for the Fiesta Bowl a week before the bowl selections. They have a huge alumni base in Arizona and there is a large amount of Iowa transplants living down there... The way their fanbase travels was a huge factor in being picked over Penn State for the Orange Bowl.
There is no way to prove it, but I would bet a lot of money Iowa would out travel Penn State to the Fiesta Bowl.

That's the issue right there. The Fiesta did not need to pick TCU. They could have had Iowa, which in addition to fans in the stands would turn on far more television sets than a Boise-TCU match. Then, the Orange takes TCU, and Boise ends up in the Fiesta.
You can't tell me that, lacking a back room deal, the Fiesta takes TCU over Iowa based on the economics.

They didn't want TWO undefeated NAQ' Schools laying claim to the mythical championship they have created. Imigine the scenario if not one but 2 NAQ schools put the woopin to top 10 BCS schools. That would prove that the time has come to let everyone in!
F**cking pansy ass dickwads!
TCU should have gotten Cincy and BSU should have gotten Florida. Both of those games could have been won by either team. TCU for my money could probably beat Texas and Bama.

The folks who own the marbles get to make the rules. The BCS has to go, and if the NCAA wants to keep any semblance of respectability in their "title" for the football champs, they need a playoff.

I think either team beats Cincy.
Iowa probably beats Boise close and probably loses to TCU close.
If, however, Florida and Tebow of Nazareth go into a game with Boise ready to play, it's an absolute plunger raping:eek:. Only way Boise beats Florida is if Florida doesn't want to be there.
