The General has really turned things around, but let's face it, you can't do it forever.

What kind of coach can the University attracted if Ault leaves us positioned in the Top 25, a member of the MWC, with a talented core? Big name coach on the rebound? (I'm talking 2-5 yrs down the line)

Dennis Erickson. He should be unemployed soon and available to relocate from Tempe to Reno in the next few years.

The last ex-Idaho coach didn't work out so well.

Money will always be an issue. My guess would be Buh if he hasnt been poached. Otherwise probably a younger guy just making a name for himself.

I think the most likely scenario is promotion of someone already on the staff. I don't see them hiring from outside at this point.

I agree. I see Buh getting the HC position after Ault.

Jim Mastro.

I see Buh, Mastro would have a shot too. If we're talking someone outside of the program, whose been successful at this level, I'd say Dan Hawkins.

I'm not so familiar with Ault's coaching tree. Does he have any 'big names' in his network? Sometimes that's all it takes, and even if it was a coach on the rebound, getting a little big-name cache wouldn't hurt anything.

Eff that (Dan Hawkins). After the fiasco that was his tenure at Colorado? Also, I think it has become clear that Boise's rise during his tenure wasn't actually his doing.

Buh, Mastro, Klenakis, Norcross, in roughly that order.

Bobby Petrino, former Louisville, Atlanta Falcons, and current Arkansas HC. The current Texas A&M DC was DC here before he left for AF, Kurt Derutyer(sp?). UCLA's run game coordinator / co-OC Jim Mastro. Arkansas OL coach Klenakis. That's off the top of my head.

Not a bad short list.

Buh is clearly the prohibitive favorite. Internal hires can be fools gold but given Buh's success at SDSU and to some extent at Stanford, he has the contacts and experience to be a head guy. I don't know about Mastro. He was excellent with the Pack but how he does at UCLA will really determine whether he's capable of being the top dog. I'm sure Buh has his sights set on a head coaching gig, I just hope he's around when CA decides to hang em up.

Hell, everyone after Ault turned into a dud. The scary part for me is I thought they all would be successful. :(

That hire right there with the momentum we had and where we were going set us back 10 years.

Absolutely, the sheer amount of solid players he had was pretty awesome and he could do nothing with it. Won the Vegas Bowl in '96, then had the Big West title game on his home turf and got a blown out (in a game that included a delay of game before kickoff because the Senior Day festivities went too long.) Then after that, it was best described as a dumpster fire. Then the Tormey era, marked by arrests, blowout losses, Nate Burleson and Chance Kretschmer's record setting freshman season. Tormey's teams actually did get better every year, but the perception of the program with blowouts and arrests did Tormey in. What a decade that was!

Who was more destructive? Tisdel or Horton?

I think Tisdel destructed the program, but I wouldn't say he was destructive, he just couldn't get it done. And he seems like a really good guy. Horton WAS destructive and does not seem like a good guy.

Well I wasn't around at that time but just looking at stats if would appear that Horton was the opposite of destructive. Look at what he did at UNLV! Had he stayed here our program would've gone way downhill under him.

Jeff Horton at UNLV:

1994: 7-5
1995: 2-9
1996: 1-11
1997: 3-8
1998: 0-11

Yup. A lost decade of performance and millions lost in fundraising, bowl revenues and licensing fees.

funny thing, I actually played for a season under "Tis'" at Sierra College. Totally ineffectual in terms of defense - like, totally unattached from defensive game planning in every conceivable way.

Does anyone think Leach could get a shot here? He does have some local ties.

I think what he built at Stanford with Ron Lynn as co-DC is his biggest accomplishment. It took him a little time to recruit and build up that defense, but he left right before the dividends of his good work paid off big time.

Isn't Sierra College a powerhouse football program though? I thought they broke some records with a winning streak. He must be doing something right?

Unless we somehow find a way to at least triple (or preferably quadruple) what Coach Ault currently makes per year, that ain't gonna happen. :o

Don't get me wrong, he completely turned that juco program around - 180 degrees. Had new facilities built and everything. But he did the same thing with another area juco program, Sacramento City College, before he came back to Nevada. Seems that at that level, a coach can simply focus on one side of the ball and get away with it (which is neither good or bad I guess, just totally specific to the quality of play at that level).
