boy is that thread great.

i love the guy who is talking about how reno cares so much about its football team and that's why unlv sucks in comparison to NV. there is some perspective for you.

It's gotten pretty bad down here. Send help!

I think they've also gotten to the point of hating BYU more than they hate us, so they'd love to see us beat the over-lovin-carp out of them.

I saw that yesterday and was going to comment but then remembered that they banned me over there.

Seeing that thread just made me realize how much of a leach the UNLV program and it's fans are. They've leached off Utah/BYU/TCU for 10 years and now they plan to do the same with BSU and Nevada. The fans clamored to invite just about every other school to join the MWC before us in it's quest to ride the conference coattails into AQ status and then bitched and moaned when we got invited. And now that the Pack is getting national respect and looks like they may finally be getting over that hump, they suddenly love our program and wanted us in the conference yesterday? Screw them!

I would guess 75+ percent of UNLV fans loath the Cougars more than they loath the Wolf Pack. While we have the instate rivarlry factor, the series have often been one sided (UNLV for basketball and Nevada for football). Not being in the same conference also dulled the flames of dislike.

On the other hand, we have been in the same conference as BYU for a number of years now, and have had some pretty heated games against the Cougs (basketball mostly; not so much in football). We know their silly and delusional fan base well, and hate how BYU forced the MWC to cater to their every wish.

With BYU going independent and Nevada joining the MWC, this Rebel fan will definitely "Back the Pack" on Saturday.

That number might be even higher than 75%. According to in-laws, anti- BYU fervor is and has been much higher than any other UNLV competitor. Maybe being in the same conference will re-ignite the flame. They don't care who BYU is playing, they root against them. NO EXCEPTIONS.

It's funny how everyone hates BYU so much. My father in law is a Wyoming grad and he hates BYU more than other team with a passion. I'm amazed how much vitriol exists between Utah and BYU in the Salt Lake papers. As for the Rebels, I'm ashamed to admit that I was a closet Tark fan in the good old days.

That's in the past NMalum, heck, I'm pretty sure a good majority of us are big fans of Lon Kruger, I know I am.

Growing up in Vegas I can attest to this first hand, Reno cares a lot more about the rivalry than Vegas. That's not saying that the students on each campus don't care the same, but the cities are way different. Honestly, not many people outside of the students and alumni care about the Nevada/UNLV rivalry down south.

I like Lon Kruger- that man can flat out coach, and he is good for both the Rebels and our rivalry. He is tough to beat- he coaches great defensive teams, but he makes the Nevada wins that much sweeter. But most of all, he is a no-nonsense guy that doesn't take crap from thugs- case in point was Beas Hamga- his only marginal Center two years ago was kicked off the team, even though he was badly needed.

Have we ever beat a UNLV Kruger team yet?

I do remember having no problem beating them before Kruger, during the Fazekas era. We even went down there and crushed them at the opening of their new stadium, if I recall correctly.

But with the addition of Kruger, and our own issues recovering from the loss of those Fazekas/Sessions teams, things have changed.

Reno and Las Vegas (the cities not the schools) had a very hot rivalry going from the 1950's up to around the early '80's, Reno actually thought at one time it could be Vegas's equal - right about the time Kerk built the MGM Grand in Reno - but of course Reno dissappeared as a world class tourist destination and Vegas became Vegas. But that intrastate city dislike carried over to the schools, and just about any long time resident of Reno has nothing good to say about Vegas, while the long time residents of Vegas have only lived there - what, about a year or two? So there's more history on the hoof in Reno than down south.

This NV Southern thread is a must-read for all the self-loathing Wolf Pack fans out there..... you know who you are. I never thought I'd see the day that hardcore UNLV fans would be not only admit to rooting for Nevada, but opining about our coach, our community-driven yearning to succeed, and our committment to our athletics. I get a serious inferiority complex from these posters (some of which I recognize back to our Rivals.com days), and it must reeeeaaaallly take some pride-swallowing on their part to write the stuff they wrote.

I'm loving what I'm reading over there, and I'm glad none of us have jumped in to stir the pot over there. Keep it classy Pack fans - we're winning over a great deal of new fans and the last thing we need to do is become "those" fans that we've come to despise.

While it's not quite that extreme IMO... they do realize next week is going to be an epic beatdown. Might as well play nice this week because next week it's thrash-city.

+1 for this. Or at least save any digs you might have for the actual week of the game. They have plenty to worry about without us trolling over there.

A lot of this stems from Reno getting the new AAA stadium, and Vegas being stuck with Cashman Field. They really respect what we have gotten accomplished up here and that has carried over to football IMO.
