Dunno if anyone mentioned this but it looks like we're going to be without Andre Davis (kicked off team) and Duke Williams (suspended for game) according to KTVN...apparently we are trying to make this game harder.

I've heard the rumors too, but I wasn't able to confirm it today. I figured it would be reported at some point. With Duke, I think that's arguably the best news that it could be based on the original word I got.
As far as Andre, he was a guy that Coach Burton had kind of found leaving a defunct program. You could see the potential, especially when you took a look at his work at the prep level. But the injury to his knee back at Western Washington seemed to sap him of his speed, and I don't think he would have been in the mix next year at all. I think Joe Easter is clearly better.
He would have been nice from a depth standpoint, but I expect James-Michael Johnson to man the Mike next year, and be flanked by fellow upperclassmen Brandon Marshall and Kaelin Burnett. Joe Easter (also a Mike), plus the recent addition of Deandre Boughton, and guys like Rosette, Liranzo, and Grimes will be in the hunt too. The addition of Boughton is looking better and better too.
While it would have been nice to have guys like Silva-Purcell and Davis, I don't think they would have ever started during their Pack careers, nor played huge roles on the team. So getting those scholarships back should be a positive.
I'd expect in the 2011 recruiting class, LB's will be a premium for the Pack. ~AWP

AWP - come on now. Getting the scholarships after the guys graduated or left on their own would have been positive. No way no how is getting these scholarships back in the way that they have positive.
This will get 5-minutes of air time come Thursday and the program will "sound" like its problems are much bigger than they are - a black eye for sure: 1) Vai academic issues; 2) Purcell and Davis legal issues; 3) Williams - suspended again.

I'm just speaking about playing time and the balance of scholarships. It is obviously a black eye for the program, although I don't know of any program that doesn't have some disciplinary/legal problems over the course of a season. That's the product of putting 85 kids, ages between 18-22 typically, playing an aggressive sport.. ~AWP

The loss of Purcell is big IMO. He played special teams and was also a backup long snapper. He was also a guy who had 4 years of experience in the program. Davis was an experiment which never seemed to pan out but I'm going to have to disagree with you on Jared. Nonetheless, if their mistakes open the door for other guys (like Easter) then that's fantastic! Easter had a good year on special teams and played well in his limited role as a backup to Bethea.

That is fair. It is unfortunate, but I think you are right.
I look back at my college days (that age range) and I had my troubles, but then again I wasn't on scholarship and playing a sport.

Remember Easter's fumble recovery against SJSU two years ago when he was just dragging the SJSU offensive players, not able to be brought down for 5-10 yards? I think we're just fine with Joe.

Underage drinking I will accept ... stealing I will not. I know everyone here drank in college and that even Student-Athletes will do it but theft I won't accept. Glad he was let go. Duke is starting to seriously piss me off though. Kid has talent but has f'ed up twice in a very short time frame.

I agree 100 percent. Come on Duke. Stealing? My 7 year old knows better.

I think you are drawing the line just about the right place. I have mixed feelings about
grades depending on the circumstances.

As far as we know it wasn't stealing that Duke was suspended for. Do we?

I suspected that we would be fine but from a public persona it doesn't look so good. I would also venture to say that Ault has made it clear to Duke that this is last chance so don't %$& it up! Although if he'd been asleep at the wheel in the middle of an intersection drunk, he'd been booted for sure instead of the slap of the wrist that some players get.

Where was it reported Duke was stealing? He was suspended for rules violations, Davis was booted for his felony theft.

I shouldn't have assumed it was for stealing. I read it that way. If I am wrong, I apologize to Duke.

Yep, Duke could have been suspended for something as mundane as breaking curfew.

Duke's obviously on a short leash, hopefully it was for something very minor and will help him toe the line for the remainder of his college career. And, I'd say everyone else on the team is on a short leash now, if this stuff didn't get their attention before I'm sure CA will make sure it does now.

According to the RGJ, nobody with Duke's name (Duke/Michael Williams) was reported as being arrested that night. Whatever he did doesn't seem to have reached that level.

Look, if you are a student athlete on a high profile football team, then you should be smart enough to not drink in public if you are underage, or at any age for that matter.

We shouldn't jump to conclusions without any info on Duke, it could have simply been falling asleep on the beach and missing a team function, or maybe sipping a Mai Tai at dinner, or missing curfew. Who knows? If it didn't involve the police, Coach Ault took care of it in the proper way.

The RGJ blog has quotes from Groth saying Williams was present when Davis was arrested. It sounds like Williams was involved but was not arrested or detained. This sounds exactly like the Fields situation.
Another reason why Nevada is not Boise -- our athletes are dumb.

She said Nevada would not bail out Davis -- she said a school might not be allowed to do so under NCAA rules anyway -- but said because of the unique situation of being in Hawaii that the university would take him back to Reno on the team's chartered flight should he make bail in time.
"I do believe it's our responsibility -- we brought him here -- it's our responsibility to bring him home," she (Groth) said.
Seems to me like she doesn't even want to take him back on the flight with that kind of statement. I understand when you have to kick players off the team, but to just abandon them like the Hanson deal is pretty sad to watch.

Are you really crying for Davis? He's lucky she's evening going to take him home. His ass should be washing dishes to pay for his ticket after the embarrassment he's caused the program and the city of reno. F that cat!

I thought these teams were supposed to be family. I wonder who is going to come up with the 11 grand to bail him out?
