LVRJ released a poll today on the Angle-Reid race. That's not what interests me (well, it does, but everyone here already has their minds made up, so it isn't worth the discussion). What is worth the discussion is that political blogs and message boards all over the place are taking excerpts from the LVRJ story and linking it. I wonder if they can threaten to sue that many people without facing a major backlash. I think it would be hilarious if bloggers on the left and right side of the American political spectrum came together to smash the LVRJ's lawsuits back into oblivion.

That would be pretty sweet. Of course, I personally expect their lawsuit company to avoid suing anyone with the means to defend themselves. They're looking for easy settlements as a way of generating revenue, not an actual legal fight.

I like the idea and think it would be funny, but I don't think it is possible. They don't have to sue everybody, just those they want to make an example of and get some "easy" money. I don't know this to be accurate, but it seems to fit in the line of thinking with illegal music downloads. The industry only went after a handful of people.

The State Democratic Party is fighting the lawsuit filed against them.

Also, the first couple of settlement have been reach.

I haven't been reading much about this, but I think "fair use" rules have long been established, if a bit vague. In the long run I think this plan will fail as fair use gets better defined. I don't think the paper has any shot of winning if they are pushed to higher courts.

Ah, but from the article I posted here not long ago from Wired about this, its clear (in my opinion) their goal is not trial, but quick settlements with people who can't afford to fight the charges.

Of course, I think people that reproduce an article wholesale, even with attribution, are going beyond fair use as I understand it, and that definitely happens. People who excerpt something for purposes of discussion, however... I don't see how such a charge could possibly stand.
