Earlier this month the son of an old friend of mine was injured in an attack in Afghanistan. PFC Timothy Hall lost one leg at the hip and the other above the knee. (http://mincountynews.com/) He has been undergoing several surgeries in Germany and is now in DC. His parents have been spending time in both places and are now going to have to spend a lot of time with him during his recovery and rehabilitation, they will suffer lost wages and when he comes home there will have to be things done to make their home wheelchair friendly.

The Hawthorne community is coming together to raise donations for the family to help them through this difficult situation. The current project is a raffle and they desperately need prizes that will draw participation. Brad and Silver and Blue Outfitters will be helping. I'm hoping that some of you with business connections might be able to help find a few companies to donate some things to help. Any donation of prizes (or donations, as I'm going to just send some cash) would be greatly appreciated.

Also, perhaps someone here has suggestions on other ways of raising awareness to help get more support for the project. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Please leave a message (or private message) here and I'll arrange the details.

What a tough situation. My appreciation and respect for Halls service/sacrifice. It is now time for his community to take care of him. I support your effort.

I think you have to make giving easy. And there is nothing better than cash. Whether it be $5 or $5,000 - it incrementally adds up. I would recommend putting together a simply/straightforward site on a web site like this LINK (http://www.charityadvantage.com/Fundraising_Website.asp) and the giving will grow much faster. I don't know if there is a cheaper site out there. If not, it might just be the most worthwhile cost to incur in the fundraiser effort ($39.95 per month / $479.94 annually). You might be able to call them and get them to provide you a coupon to get a little more of a discount.

If you have time - search other options. Or, do other people have recommendations on a site? If his family oks the effort - perhaps S&BS could rally enough money together to cover the first 12-months. I'm tight on cash, but I am willing to cover a month and maybe 2 if we can't get enough people together. This is however your call if you want to pursue it.

I'll do that Ricky. I just hooked them up with some connections I have through Reno PD and it looks like they are going to help with getting businesses to donate for the raffle to take place in August.

They are working on getting their 501c charitable paperwork done so we can move forward with donations. I'll post the donation info as soon as that's done and I'll e-mail you as well. Thank you so much.

As for Tim, my source says he's not out of the woods yet. He's still in serious condition and they expect it to be 2 to 3 months before he can start rehab, then 2 or 3 years of rehab.

That there is a foundation called the fisher house. They provide housing at no cost to families of service members who are injured and receiving medical help. There are actually a lot of organizations that help with this. The Casualty assistance officer (the family should have one assigned to them) should be pointing them in a bunch of directions for help. Let me know if there is anything that I can do, as far as info in the time being. My thoughts and prayers are with the family as well as the soldier. What unit is he in?

Here's a link for the Veterans Guest House. Sounds similar to that fisher house.

He should have already been contacted for VA Benefits. If not I can see what needs to get done to start the process.

Thanks, ballcagle11. The link didn't work for me, but I found it with a search. I was surprised I hadn't seen anything to this point. Here's the RGJ article on Timothy Hall (http://www.rgj.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=20107010350) with the important info:

Accounts have been established at Bank of America and Financial Horizon's Credit Union to help Hall's family with medical expenses. The accounts are under the name "Timothy Hall Benefit."

So far, to my knowledge, there are prize donations from Lakeridge Country Club, the Reno Aces, CalNeva and a few other businesses. Brad and Mark are also going to help out. I have a 501(c) number for the charitable donation tax purposes:

Tax ID #272847911

If anyone wants to contribute a cash donation please do so at BofA. Raffle donations are being handled by:

Debbie Sitton e-mail: debbie.sitton@us.army.mil

Or you can contact me and I'll forward the info to Debbie as she will come to Reno to pick up donated items with the raffle tentatively expected to take place in mid August.

As I mentioned before we will be receiving some help from the Reno PD with finding donations. Debbie and friends in Hawthorne had a sub sandwich sale in Hawthorne last week and raised an amazing $4,000 for Tim and his family, but that's just a dent in what's needed. The appreciation of the family is indescribable.

Thank you anybody that chooses to help. I have heard that Tim is in very good spirits despite his traumatic injuries. I have never met him, but he sounds like an amazing young man.
