News 4 has confirmed that former Reno HS and Duke power forward Olek Czyz's release papers have arrived at the University of Nevada. The 6-foot-7, 240 pounder's recruiting will open back up and he will have to sit out a year per NCAA rules before suiting up for another school. Czyz averaged 20 points and 10 rebounds per game as a senior when he led the Huskies to a 4A Nevada state title.

fantastic, nothing like keeping these high profile home town boys in reno. Should be great for the program and possibly attendance.

This will undoubtedly make Frank's head melt, just like in the Ark scene in the first Raiders of the Lost Ark.

When does he become eligible for Nevada? In 2010-11, or 2011-12?

My understanding, and correct me if I'm wrong...was that since Duke granted him a release, if he found a college within 30 days, he would be eligible the next season in 2010, and if it was more than 30 days, it would be 2011.

This time next year is my understanding, much like Olsen this year.

If I read it correctly, he will be eligible one year from today as a matter of fact. He can't play in the fall semester but can in the spring similar to Olsen

in the article someone posted about him transferring it said he could play the second half of next season if he found a school in 30 days, so he'll be in silver and blue in about a year.

It seems like he really gets jipped here if I understand this correctly. He just burned his soph season playing about 1 games worth of action, and then he will miss atleast 1/3 of his junior season too? So he will be a red shirt senior and still not even have a years worth of action under his belt?

He'll have two and a half with us. He's only a sophomore this year.

He'll be a second semester sophomore if granted his release. He'll have 2.5 years of eligibilty with Nevada having burned his shirt to get here.

Correction: 2.5 years. He's a sophomore and then he will redshirt this coming spring semester and be a redshirt sophomore when he is eligible spring semester next year. He'll then have a full junior and senior year here.

Right, but for all intents and purposes he is now a junior as far as we're concerned. Seems like he just blew 3/5 of his college career by going to Duke.

You're both wrong. Olek still has his redshirt year, which he'll use while he sits out the transfer. He will have 2.5 seasons of playing time left when he begins playing next Dec, so he will have been eligible to suit up and play four entire seasons by the time he's done.

Oh Ok that's what I was misunderstanding, I didn't know if they would roll it over to spring 2011 and consider him still a sophomore.

I wouldn't say he "blew" his college career by going to Duke. Sure he didn't get as much playing time as he wanted, but Duke is a high quality institution. Glad to have him here in Reno.

Just reminding everyone...Olek's RELEASE papers have arrived at Nevada. That means his recruiting opens back up, he gets up to five visits and only the schools who have received his release papers can pursue him.

Does that mean he has only 5 transfer papers to give, or that he can send as many as he wants and only visit 5?

I think he can send out as many as he wants...

So he can only visit 5 in 30 days. That's a lot of traveling I would bet he already has something in mind. The travel time is even more condensed because of the holiday etc. I am sure he wants to spend time with his family. Just my $.02, I wonder who else has received his paperwork.

Ain't the NCAA swell? They are all about the student athlete.... ;)

Meanwhile a Coach can bail on his undefeated team for a better paying gig and everybody thinks it's ok because it's a free market, and yadda yadda yadda. The fact of the matter is, the NCAA uses the revenue producing student athletes like assembly line workers with no rights and no say. It's criminal at times.

From the looks of things, I do not believe at this time Czyz comes to Nevada. ~AWP

He spurned us the first time around and I don't think there's any reason for him not to. Although, why even bother giving us a look if he has no desire. I wonder if after dealing with a big school and not getting much PT he may want something a little smaller (mid-major if you may) where he may stand out a little more. I've never seen him play but from what I've read here we're not missing out on too much if he does decide on elsewhere...only time will tell.
