View Full Version : I miss Fox

I think Carter is a better coach than Fox, but I still miss Fox for another reason. The crowd got used to taking their cues from him, but Carter doesn't give the crowd anything to cue on. This year, it takes Luke getting his head taken off or the game to be tied in the final minute for the crowd to get into it. Our crowd needs to evolve to get loud on its own from the beginning of the game onward. Get it together crowd!!!

The first thing I noticed in the RGJ pic of Brandon shooting the game winning shot is that everybody in the stands behind him is sitting down. Unbelievable.

Yes, I would agree. Fox knew there was some showmanship involved and he played the part (but it also fit his style). Just like an intentional "T", Fox knew how to play the crowd... rip that coat off, stomp his feet and throw his arms around.

I think Carter will get there. Remember this is his first head gig. Not that it wasn't Fox's, or TJ's, but I think he will learn, and I also think the fans will learn. He's not nearly as animated as either of those coaches were, but there will eventually be a tell when things aren't going the way he wants. Right now it's subtle, not a jacket throw or a foot stomp, or charging out on the court. I still can't peg it but it's there, somewhere. Remember with Fox it started with busting the white board in the huddle, and grew from there. I think Carter is working to keep his cool sometimes, and when he eventually loses it, he will learn that it is OK because it will get the reaction he wants, both from his team and from the crowd. In this instance it's a lot like poker, everyone has a tell, you just have to figure out what it is.

Carter may not be as animated as Fox but he did get a warning from the refs last night. He was pretty mad about some of the fouls and no calls.

I wish Fox the best at Georgia, but I do not miss him and his on-court antics. He's been the talk of the SEC when it comes to his pouting and foot stomping. When we get closer to conference play the season ticket holders will start showing up as opposed to giving their tickets to their family or clients. The crowd will be into it and I hope the student section gets more rowdy too.
I'm still screaming my head off from Sec. 35.

I wondered if he got a warning last night. There were some ridiculous no-calls and Fox would have been tossed from this game and the Houston game earlier in the year. Carter's tell is standing up and talking to the refs instead of the players. If he's off the bench, that should tell the crowd all they need to know.

It's great that you're screaming your head off. Fox's antics were negatives for the team, but they got the crowd into the game from the get go and that is what I miss.

100% agree. Some great points.
To clear up my point... I don't think it is a negative that Carter isn't more animated. It is his style. But there has to be a tell and the crowd does need to figure it out. It will be fun to see how this all develops.
I disagree with other posters that Fox was a negative for the team. At times he did go over board, but that again was his style. You all loved him when he was here and decided to change the tone when he left. Fox has a different coaching style and one that fed the crowd. Carter will figure it out and in his own way will pull the crowd.

I got a random high-five in the corridor after the game from some random fan for my cheering. I was absolutely livid with the amount of contact they allowed from #42 in the first half, only to call substantially less contact as a foul on Dario or Marko. I often wish I wasn't 30 rows up, so I could more clearly express myself, but perhaps having some intervening space is a good thing.
But yeah, it was a weak crowd (and I fully admit I was a part of that). But to have so many people sitting down in the final minute of a tied game... that was just sad.

Are you in the same spot you've been in the past Wiggum? If so, I'm pretty sure I heard you.

I miss Fox, but it always seemed like Carter was the brains of the operation and the guy we had to keep. This is an incredible situation to be in for your first job and I think he has done an outstanding job. Theatrics aside, Fox leaving was a blessing in disguise.

I don't miss Fox at all. I don't miss watching the players not have fun, I don't miss the foot stomping and pouting, I don't miss seeing players being taken out when they're hot, and I don't miss his recruiting. I think Carter will out-recruit Fox very quickly.

But do you miss the crowd getting into the game? I sure do, and that is the point of this thread. The crowd needs to pick it up, because right now, the crowd sucks some major a$$.

Yeah, but that should get worked out once WAC play starts. Carter will learn some things and start using them I'm sure.

Fox was the only reason we beat VCU last year, most every one here will attest to that! If he hadn't gotten tossed to fire up that crowd, we do not win the game.

If Carter gets improved recruits, and the team starts to dominate competition on a regular basis, wins the WAC, gets to the tourni, etc... then the fan base will know his style and root inependantly, right? We want the team to win, that is number one, right? Yes, I want the crowd and coach to be fun, but having the team support the coach, and for the coach to support the team shoud be number one, correct?

The fans should get off their hands no matter who is the coach. Perhaps I shouldn't have invoked Fox in the initial post. This thread isn't about Fox or Carter as a coach. It is about the crowd sucking and the fact that when they had Fox telling them to cheer, they did. Get off your hands people and get off your butts while you're at it.

qft and +1
It's no different with the football team. The problem isn't the coach.

You know what I don't miss. 10 passes around the perimeter and Luke or Armon going 1 on 1 to get a marginal shot late in the shot clock.I have not seen much of that and I have seen a lot more cutting off the ball leading to better shots. I think this will pay off later in the season and despite some tough losses the vibes of the team remain good.

In my opinion, the coach shouldn't have to give the crowd cues of when to get into the game. These percentages are just estimations, but 15% of our crowd is awesome (and it probably made up of most of the people on this forum). The other 85% pretty much blow and will sit on their hands with tape over their mouths the entire game if it were possible.
Carter is doing his part. If I'm not mistaken, wasn't the "Stand Till Your Opponent Scores" thing his idea? I think this is a great move to create some tradition and crowd involvement.
QUESTION: I'm curious though, can anyone tell me how the crowd takes to it? Are people actually standing this whole time? Its hard to tell on the internet feed. Thanks.

I absolutely agree with you that the crowd shouldn't have to take their cues from the coach. That's actually the point of the thread. I was just using Fox to make that point.
As for the standing until the other team scores, I'd say there's between 75 and 80% participation. It has been much higher than I expected.

I was thinking the exact same thing at Thursday's game ... the crowd has lost it's emotional leader ... time to find a new one ... lets give Harry W. a drum :D
On another observation ... it sure felt like a typical Fox half court game too ... I understand thats because EWU was making alot of baskets and the Pack turned the ball over quite a few times ... so the higher tempo transition game can't pick up steam ... but there was a bit of a disconnect for me ... Half Court Game without the sharp dressed HC on the sideline stomping his feet, baring his teeth, pumping a fist ...

I wont miss Fox no matter how much the crowd got up because he threw a temper tantrum. When you watch a head coach pull a young player off the court cause he made a mistake and scream at him in front of 8,000+ people....that is extremely unprofessional and why the team didn't have any fun last year. The crowd getting excited cause he threw his jacket off is nothing compared to how he embarassed himself and the players last year.

Like coach said before the season started, you can't run when you're always pulling the ball out of the net.

Again, this thread isn't about Fox's coaching. It is about how crappy our crowd is that they can't get up during the game without the coach throwing a tantrum. Come on crowd!!! I know you have it in you.
