$4.42 a gallon in taxes. (http://www.autoblog.com/2010/04/21/taxes-drive-gas-prices-to-over-7-a-gallon-in-uk-mass-boycott-c/)

If I were in control of tax policy I'd add at least $1 per gallon (probably more) in taxes and let everyone write that off their income taxes at the end of the year. It would result in alternatives (mass transit, electric vehicles etc...) being more competitive, reduce consumption of oil and stimulate private firms to develop alternative fuels and vehicles without the government picking winners and losers.

But $7 a gallon? Wow.

I'm not sure if it's the same in the UK but when I was visiting France, gas was about $6/gallon back when it was about $2.20 in the States. Despite the high price in gas, nobody really seemed to mind because just about everybody either rode mass transit, walked/biked, or had a fuel efficient vehicle or scooter. The desire/need to drive over there just isn't the same as it is here because they have more alternatives.

They're having mass demonstrations in the UK and you don't travel nearly as far in Europe as the US. France is smaller than Texas.

easy to do in countries the size of one of our bigger states... not so easy when you are 3200 from coast to coast.

Yep, the UK is smaller than Oregon. I love the CIA - World Factbook (https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/uk.html).

1st time Visitors to the US is.. how frigging huge it is out west. The east coast is very much like Europe.. all the major cities are pretty close to one another NYC, Boston, Baltimore, Philly, DC etc... but out here... they are spread out pretty significantly.

I know we aren’t complaining about gas prices here (just in general). When people realize oil is not a renewable and that it comes from oceans, and generally harder to reach places from deep in the earth and all the processing it takes to make it work for your car engine is truly remarkable. The same people that complain about gas prices are the people that won’t complain about the 2dollars they spend on sugar water known as energy drinks

Sugar water? Gas is cheaper than plain old bottled spring water.
