I was there last weekend for the USA 7's and had an absolute blast but I must say Vegas (outside of the strip) is a fricking shithole. The drive from the Hard Rock to Sam Boyd was like driving through a third world country. Looked like a collections of bars, weekly motels, crack dens and trailer parks.
I am glad I live in Reno.
Although I must say the Aria / City Center is simply friggin amazing!

To play devil's advocate here........doesn't Reno have it's share of all of that.......except without the Hard Rock and City Center? In fact, you could drive through pretty much any city and say the same.

Exactly. I was driving around near downtown last month and I was shocked at all the empty, boarded up buildings, closed businesses that I used to frequent (and 3 casinos at which I had once worked) and just general run-down look. If Reno could still generate growth in tourist dollars like Vegas it would be a much nicer place...and I'd still be there. So that's a bit of a trade off. ;)

You are correct.. Reno has some areas that look pretty rough. But this was the entire distance (save the last 3 blocks) which is around 8 miles or so. Thats 8 miles of rough area Slap... thats pretty bad and it isn't the only shitty part of Vegas. If it was the only "hood" in vegas I can see comparing the two but seriously they have miles upon miles upon miles of bad neighborhoods.

You drove through some of the lower income areas of vegas on your drive out there. But that drive to me is no different then taking Mill or Glendale east from down town to Sparks.

I stayed at Vdara. It was amazing except they were still working out the kinks. Got a free night.

Chatter, did you play in the casino at all? Just curious as to your opinion of the server based gaming that is running on the Aria floor.

My best friend lives out on Los Prados and it's a great community. I find Vegas ugly due to the barren surroundings, but it's a fantastic place to visit and a good place to live. If not for the heat I would probably live there myself.

I don't gamble. Never found it fun to be honest. I would rather buy a good meal.

Not all of vegas is a shithole.. just most of vegas is a shithole. There are parts of almost every city that are nice.

Inner city Vegas is a shithole, like most inner city areas of medium to large cities. The main part of the strip is nice from the 215 north to the Wynn, outside of that it's pretty seedy. The nice areas of Vegas are the extended suburbs, Summerlin, Aliante, Southern Highlands, Lone Mountain, Centennial Hills and newer parts of Green Valley. The mayor, like Reno's mayor, has made a very concerted effort to revitalize the downtown area (Fremont Street area) with some limited success.
Are there places I'd rather live? Absolutely! San Diego, San Francisco, Newport, OR, Portland, the Cayman Islands, Turks and Caicos, Lugano, London, Sydney... But given my current situation there are FAR worse places I could live than Lost Wages.

Big cities are overrated. Quality of life, unless you are fabulously wealthy, is hit or miss in places like SF , NY, Chicago or especially London. If I had my druthers, I'd keep a nice place here in Reno and have a sweet house on the Big Island or North Shore of O'ahu. Big city living is exciting and intense but it's also filthy, crowded and oppressive to the soul. I need open spaces! As for Vegas, it's a decent place to call home and you can't beat the nightlife. Golf is overpriced though and the summer heat is just too much for my liking. It's not the daytime heat which bothers me though. It;s the 99 degrees at 11pm that's a killer!
