Nevada to the MWC

Nevada Crowd 965-1SilverandBlueSports has confirmed that the University of Nevada is departing the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) and accepting an invitation to the Mountain West Conference (MWC) that was extended to them this afternoon.

Sources have said that an agreement between Nevada and the MWC was made prior to the announcement of the invitation announced on the official MWC website; LINK

Over the past three days, plenty of potential changes have been mentioned regarding WAC and MWC teams, with each conference trying to gain the upper hand on each other.  BYU made the first move, with the Cougars reportedly deciding to bolt the MWC altogether.  Although nothing is final and BYU could change directions once again, their decision to go independent in football, plus join the WAC in all other sports, appears to be a move based solely on the school’s belief that they can market their football program better nationally and dramatically increase profits.  In order to do so, BYU is likely to leave the MWC in all sports.

The next two teams in line for MWC invites, as we reported more than a month ago during Boise State’s transition from the WAC to the MWC, was more than likely Nevada and Fresno State.  And with BYU gone, the MWC wasted little time in going after both schools.

SilverandBlueSports will have much more on this conference realignment, with a specific outlook on both football and basketball, in a feature of “The Howl” tonight.
