UNR-SMC 650-4The Pack baseball team stayed hot on Tuesday afternoon, winning for the fifth time in their past 8 games and moving their record to 17-13-1 after scoring an 8-5 victory over visiting Saint Mary’s College.

Nevada trailed 3-0 after the first frame and half when the Gaels posted RBI singles by Riley Heinzer and Donald Collins, but the Pack struck back in the bottom half of the second with back-t0-back-to-back doubles by Nick Melino, Brian Barnett and rising freshman standout Cullen Mahoney, and shortstop star Kevin Rodland tied the game at 3-3 with a single.  The hit also extended Rodland’s hit streak to 10 games.

The Pack took the lead for good when Michael Turay singled with the bases loaded in the bottom of the third, and then made it 7-3 in the fifth when Garrett Yrigoyen doubled home and run, and then subsequently scored on an error.

After another Heinzer single plated two more runs for Saint Mary’s, Nevada sealed the deal when Barnett, a junior who attended nearby McQueen high school before playing two seasons at Western Nevada College and earning the 2008 Co-Scenic West Conference Player of the Year honor, clubbed his 8th homer of the season.
