Wolf Pack knock off #13 UC-Irvine, 5-3
The Nevada Wolf Pack upset one of the top teams in the country as they hosted the University of California-Irvine at Peccole Park on Friday afternoon as the Pack ended the #13 ranked Anteaters (13-6) six-game winning streak.
Wolf Pack senior starting pitcher Chris Garcia brought his excellent 2.08 ERA and 1-1 record to the mound as the starting pitcher for the series opener. Things did not start the way Garcia would have liked as he gave up a home run to Anteater third baseman Brian Hernandez in the top of the first, allowing Irvine to jump out to a 1-0 lead.
Irvine extended the lead in the top of the second. After back to back walks to start the inning the Anteaters added a run when Ryan Fisher singled to centerfield to score Ronnie Shaeffer to give Irvine a 2-0 lead.
Nevada threatened in the bottom of the second but stranded their runners. After Brian Barnett doubled to start the inning and a sacrifice bunt by Brock Stassi advanced him to third, Nevada failed to plate a run after consecutive ground outs.

The Silver and Blue would get on the board in the third when starting catcher Carlos Escobar Jr. hit a drive down the left field line that somehow stayed fair. Escobar looked like Carlton Fisk as he appeared unsure if the ball would stay fair as he eyed it while walking up the line until the umpire gave the home run signal. The 340-foot shot made it 2-1 Irvine at the end of three.
The Pack struck again in the fourth when Stassi got things going with a one out triple. Following a Brett Hart strikeout, Nick Leid tripled to the wall in right-centerfield to score Stassi. Leid scored when Pack second baseman Joe Kohan hit a bloop single over the head of the Irvine shortstop as Nevada took a 3-2 lead in the fourth.
Brock Stassi extended the Nevada lead in the sixth when he led off the inning with a mammoth home run to the deepest part of the ballpark. The solo shot was the fourth of the year for Stassi and gave the Pack a 4-2 lead.
Beau Witsoe came on in relief for starter Chris Garcia to start the seventh inning. Garcia finished the game with two strikeouts while giving up two earned runs in six innings of work. With Garcia in position for the win his teammates did their best to give him some insurance.
In the bottom of the seventh Westely Moss reached on a walk and came all the way around from first when Shaun Kort hit a gap shot to the opposite field to give Nevada a 5-2 lead with six outs to play.
In the top of the eighth Westely Moss made an incredible leaping catch at the wall in center to preserve the lead as Nevada looked to hang on to their bid for an upset but Irvine would not go away quietly.
In the top of the ninth the Anteaters plated a run but with a runner on second and the tying run at the plate Witsoe held on for his first save of the season.
With the win Nevada moved to 11-10 on the season and will face Irvine in game two Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. at Peccole Park as Jeremy Cole (1-0, 1.80 ERA) will start for Nevada against Christian Bergman (2-0, 5.34 ERA).

Great win for the Pack! Hopefully we can keep it going tomorrow!!
