Nevada Baseball 150-5The Nevada Wolf Pack (8-6) came into the game with Sonoma State in a tie for first place in the Western Athletic Conference standings with San Jose State and with a big day from Kevin Rodland the Pack defeated the Seawolves 10-3 at Peccole Park on Tuesday afternoon.

On the mound for Nevada was Tyler Rogstad who was making his second appearance of the year. His starting debut got off to a rocky start with a leadoff double by Sonoma State’s Kyle Jones, who came around to score after a pair of infield ground outs to put the Seawolves up 1-0 early.

The Silver and Blue struck back on a leadoff home run by Kevin Rodland over the left field fence in the bottom of the first for his first round tripper of the season. It was a great sign, as the senior from Washington was just warming up. Shaun Kort smacked a two-RBI double, scoring Westley Moss and Brock Stassi on the shot to the left-center gap to put the Pack up 3-1.

Brian Barnett was hit by a pitch and the Pack had runners on first and second with nobody out. With the Pack threatening, Sonoma State went to the bullpen early, pulling starter Joey Van Cleave, and bringing in Mark Lincoln.

Lincoln would get out of the jam but not before Nevada scored another run on a double steal, with Kort taking home after Sonoma State tried to throw out Barnett at second giving the Pack a 4-1 lead after one. Things quieted down at Peccole Park after that first inning, with pitching taking over for the next four innings.

But Nevada would add to their lead in the fifth. Stassi, who is at the top of the WAC in hitting, led off with a single to center. Kort followed with a blast over the right fielders head that rolled to the wall to put runners at second and third with no outs. Brian Barnett brought them in with a deep drive that hit the wall just below the Peccole Park scoreboard in right field for a two-run double that put the Pack up 6-1.

Nevada had some defensive issues in the sixth after Tom Jameson gave up a pair of singles and was pulled in favor of Mat Keplinger. Keplinger got a nice ground ball that should have been a double play but Sonoma State beat the throw to first. Second basemen Cullen Mahoney committed an error on the next play that allowed a run to score and another run would score on a Seawolves single to right field that made the score 6-3.

But the Pack struck back, extending the lead in the sixth when Nick Melino hammered a home run over the center field wall to put the Pack up 7-3. Nevada would add some insurance in the seventh when the hot hitting Rodland blew the game open. The Nevada shortstop hit his second homer of the day over the left field fence. The three-run blast from Rodland put Nevada on top by a score of 10-3. Rodland finished the game going two for five with two home runs and four-RBI.

With the victory the Pack moved to 9-6 on the season as Nevada will take on San Francisco State at Peccole Park at 2 P.M. on Wednesday. The Gators play in NCAA division two and come into the game on a three game losing streak with a 9-14 record overall.
